We should recall that a paper collection is generally based on similar roots, with various “flavors,” colors. A collection of typefaces should reflect this similar mood, even the style of papers should be reflected into the fonts. Each of the members try their best to be different from the others because of their features. They should work harmoniously in contrast.
Jean François Porchez was approached at the end of 2009 by Reflex Image to create a set of typefaces to relaunch the Conqueror papers collection. An important website and various others communications material was created by the agency. The designer Seb Lester and the photographer Thomas Brown have been hired to created various visuals using Conqueror fonts.
For the first showing to the agency, we’ve created a set of fake in use pieces using the AW Conqueror fonts (at the time with a very small glyph set who explain some fake texts). The idea was to recreate a 60-70’s ambiance to clearly the set the general feeling of the typeface family.

Launched at the end of August 2010 by Arjowiggins, AW Conqueror is a family of Free fonts available at Conqueror.com website. This family include 5 variations with great potential: Small glyph sets, mostly all caps, but based on same structure, with some connection between them (width for example), to offer a great & easy titling toolbox to any designers, from skillful to beginner.
The fonts will be available at the Conqueror website for free until the 1st April 2012. The licence follow the usual commercial font licence, so you can use for any projects, but not allowed to distribute the fonts to third parties. The only difference is that you don’t have to paid for your licence. Indeed, feel free to contact us in case of specific requests about the family, such additional weights, specific needs not available on the existing set.
AW Conqueror is family created for Arjowiggins in 5 variations.

New Maclean’s nameplate on the 2010 cover.
In 2009, Typofonderie was asked by Jason Logan in charge of the cover design of Canadian Business to improve their current masthead which was to be used for their upcoming redesign.

Maclean’s cover in 2006.
This time, Jason Logan teamed again with Jean François Porchez for Maclean’s cover. The idea was to recreate the 60’s version of Maclean’s nameplate. The job wasn’t so simple, as an autotrace of the original wasn’t the immediate solution. Maclean’s masthead was fully redesigned from scratch, to create the perfect balance between the open forms of the C+L and the quite heavier M+A+N diagonals letterforms. When the best form was achieved, several grades have been designed and tested, to create the best result on the cover when used with usual headlines. A good collaboration again.

During the summer 2009 we’ve been asked by Real Simple to customize Parisine PTF for their own use. We’ve adjusted few things for Real Simple and created new weights. Today, we’ve integrated this idea of intermediate weights into Parisine PTF Gris: A new Regular between the original Parisine PTF Clair Bold and Parisine PTF Regular (as on the image above). Bold follow same mechanism. Finally, it’s also why this new sub-family was called Gris (Gray in English).

For text and some subhead, headlines, Mencken typeface family originally designed for the Baltimore Sun was used in order to improve readability of the content. Along various sizes cut of Mencken, a new sanserif specially created for this redesign appear. Called Ardoise PTF (Slate in english) because of the sharped endings and strong vitality of the shapes: 14 series in roman and italic. Roughly based on an old condensed sans design for Charente Libre, the result smell a bit of Antique Olive. The italic was designed between a slanted roman and a pure italic to perform well in editorial use. The new sanerif family, Ardoise PTF should be available later in the year at Typofonderie.

The new masterhead of the Pèlerin was designed in capitals in a way to recreate an identity lost along the years. The general style, a pure geometrical sanserif with flair refer to some thirties style of lettering. R ending stroke was acclaimed during testings as adding the necessary “values” to the magazine.
